JBS Biodiesel becomes Brazil’s first company to qualify to sell biofuel to europe

As a company with global reach, JBS is proud of the positive impact we make through our sustainability initiatives. We pride ourselves on taking the initiative and pushing forward as global leaders in ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Last year, we were honoured that the JBS Biodiesel plant in the state of Sao Paulo, was the first Brazilian facility to obtain the certification for emission of carbon reduction credits (CBIOs) shortly followed by our site in Mato Grosso being certified by the RenovaBio program.

RenovaBio is one of Brazil’s flagship decarbonisation initiatives aimed at promoting the use of sustainable biofuels as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The RenovaBio policy is based on annual national decarbonization targets for the fuel sector, to encourage an increase in the production and participation of biofuels in the country’s energy transport matrix.

CBIOs, a facet of the RenovaBio policy, are a financial asset tradable on a stock exchange. Launched in April 2020, certified biofuel producers are now able to sell these certificates, with each unit corresponding to a total savings of one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (COeq) in comparison to fossil fuel emissions.

JBS Biodiesel has already announced plans to increase its capacity for CBIOs to approximately 800,000 per year – the equivalent of 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Through this certification, JBS has been informed that the biodiesel produced by the factory issues seven times fewer greenhouse gases than fossil diesel, representing a reduction of nearly 86% in emissions.

As the only Brazilian company in the industry certified to export biodiesel to the European market, in April of this year, the aforementioned JBS plant in Sao Paulo state shipped 3.6 million litres of biofuel to the Port of Rotterdam.

“JBS is internationally recognised for its sustainable production methods and high-quality biodiesel, which complies with the strictest standards. We are constantly assessing new market opportunities and are proud to have a strong competitive position in the foreign market,” says Alexandre Pereira, director of JBS Biodiesel.

The JBS Biodiesel division is an industry pioneer in Brazil, achieving the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) status, which it has maintained since 2014.
