Blockchain platform developed by JBS launched to accelerate traceability of entire cattle production chain
As part of our Together for the Amazon initiative, in April JBS was proud to commence registration of producers on its landmark Transparent Livestock Farming Platform. JBS has worked towards developing a robust and secure tool based on blockchain technology which will make it possible to extend monitoring to capture suppliers of suppliers across our value chain.
By signing up voluntarily to the Platform, beef cattle producers who directly supply JBS will list their suppliers of animals on the platform which has been developed by specialized company Ecotrace.
This information is then sent electronically for validation to Agri Trace Rastreabilidade Animal, a system of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock Farming (CNA), which checks whether the list of suppliers is complete.
Companies accredited on the platform will undergo socioenvironmental compliance analysis based on the same criteria currently used by JBS, in an agreement with the Federal Prosecution Office (MPF), to check for the existence of:
- deforestation, respecting the Brazilian Forest Code
- invasion of indigenous lands or environmental conservation units
- hard labour
- use of areas embargoed by IBAMA
The outcome of this analysis will be sent directly to the JBS supplier who, for the first time, will be able to view socioenvironmental compliance throughout their entire supply chain. This will in turn facilitate plans to mitigate risks and engage in actions that help producers to regularise their situations where necessary. At no time will JBS have access to sensitive information as, thanks to blockchain technology, it will be possible to maintain the commitment to the confidentiality of third-party information.
A fundamental part of the project is a supply chain engagement strategy to accelerate compliance with JBS’ socioenvironmental standards. All beef cattle suppliers of JBS will sign up to the program by the end of 2025.
In addition to the creation of the Transparent Livestock Farming Platform, JBS has set up 13 Green Offices at processing units across the length and breadth of Brazil. These teams will primarily be on hand to help the suppliers of the suppliers normalise their environmental status in line with our stringent policies.
