JBS’ Campo Forte enters the fertilizer market

JBS is proud to announce that it is the first Brazilian food producer to re-use waste generated by the company’s operations to manufacture fertilizer. The move also marks JBS Novos Negócios’ entry into a new market segment. Located in Guaiçara, Sao Paulo, ‘Campo Forte Fertilizantes’ has capacity to manufacture 150,000 tons of fertilizer annually.

The £20 million (BRL 134 million) initiative is the result of a 2016 study into the best ways to re-use waste from JBS operations. Fertilizer production allows JBS to continue to support the circular economy, in line with the company’s 2040 Net Zero commitment.

“This launch highlights the JBS’s sustainable focus and is another circular economy initiative from the Group. We believe this is a good use of the waste from our operations, generating a product with added value, from a highly technological and sustainable industrial process,” comments Susana Carvalho, Executive Director at JBS Novos Negócios.

Campo Forte will deliver a line of fertilizers that promotes an increase in productivity, with reduced impact to the environment. This initiative will also provide an opportunity for the local production of fertilizers, as currently “87% of the volume of fertilizers consumed in Brazil come from import. This represents a major opportunity for company expansion,” says Susana.
